What are some of the greatest influences in your career?
“Some of my greatest influences came from the early 1990′ and the early 2000’s. In the 90’s brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren’s Polo were a big inspiration. They created timeless piece that I love and they were a staple in fashion industry. They sparked my interest in wanting my own clothing company. My biggest inspiration came during the early 200’s was when I was Introduced to streetwear. That was the era when streetwear was becoming the “it factor’ in fashion. Brands such as: 10 Deep, Lemar & Dauley, Crooks & Castles, The Hundreds and Mighty Healthy made me believe that it’s possible for an individual to create their own brand without the financial backing of a big cooperation. They were regular young people like me that created their brands in their dorm rooms, printing shirts in their garages and the world fell in love with their creative vision.”
Where do you draw your inspirations from?
“My inspirations come from music, art, fashion and everyday life. I might be listening to a song which gives me an idea to make a design. From the people I meet, places I go or what I watch on television I can get ideas and build on that to create something wonderful.”
When did you discover your passion for design?
I discovered my passion for designing while I was in middle school. At that age I had a lot of time on my hands and all I did was draw. I wasn’t able to afford the brands that I liked so I started to sketch out my deigns and wanted to own a brand that people would love.
Tell us a little about your creative process when starting a collection?
“When starting a collection it goes through many stages. Think of it as if the “idea” for the collection is a piece of lumber and the end results is the finished house. I constantly build on that one idea which gives me more ideas to better the one I had before. Once I create the first piece of the collection I send it to people that I know have different taste and won’t hesitate to tell me that they don’t like it. If 5 out of 10 people like the design I ask the ones that don’t like it the reason why. With their answer I continue to work on the designs so that they will like it. It might be the color or fonts that were used or placing something in a different location. I aim to get 80% – 100% positive feedback. After I create the first design that everyone loves I create the collection around the design. During the process of creating a new collection the theme of the collection might change about 5 times. So the original idea I had for the collection in the beginning will not be the same in the end.”
What role does music play in your creative processes?
Music plays a big role in my creative process because i am listening to music majority of the time. The feeling I may get when I listen to a certain artist or record might put me in the mood that sparks a vision. That vision might turn in to a design or a collection. Music relaxes me and puts me in a great state of mind.
